Position Title:
City of Seattle Security Officer

Class Summary:
Employees in this class provide security and patrol functions to enforce rules, regulations, and City ordinances.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is the journey-level class in the Security series. Employees in this class, under close supervision, patrol a designated area to provide security and safety to the grounds and general public.

Knowledge of the principles and methods of building and grounds security is required. Employees are responsible for rendering first aid to the public and employees and for determining if emergency treatment is necessary. Specific guidelines including laws, regulations, City policies, and procedures exist, however, the employee must exercise judgment in determining the appropriate guideline to apply. Direction received is frequent with most work activities reviewed by the supervisor. Contacts include Seattle Center staff, events personnel, law enforcement agency staff, and the general public for the purpose of providing security, regulation enforcement, assistance and exchanging information

Examples of Work:

  • Patrol designated area to enforce laws and regulations, prevent and check for property damage, and identify potential safety hazards.
  • Provide information and assistance to the public.
  • Secure doors and gates at closing time change locks for security reasons.
  • Enforce regulations, apprehend violators, issue parking citations and calls for police aid if needed.
  • Transport or provide security for the transport of municipal receipts and Monorail monies.
  • Maintain routine records and prepare written reports.
  • Report malfunctioning of electrical equipment and report buildings or grounds in need of maintenance or repair.
  • Administer first aid and calls for emergency aid, if needed.
  • Perform other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned
Work Environment/Physical Demand:
Work nights, evenings, weekends, holidays and/or irregular hours. Stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time. Frequently lift objects in excess of 50 pounds. Come in contact with potentially abusive/threatening people in enforcement of regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:
Requires a minimum of one year security work experience (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).

Licensing and Other Requirements:
Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
